4 Unorthodox Self Defense Techniques

If you are interested in Martial arts self-defense training, then you should know that the basics of personal protection are better learned from a qualified instructor. It is also important to understand that most of the self-defense techniques taught in any martial arts class may not apply in a competition but will help you handle your opponent either in a street fight or when attacked at home. So here is a look at the 4 street defense techniques you will be taught in the dojo.

Ripping and Tearing

This involves ripping and tearing of the flesh, ears, hair etc. Although these are self-defense techniques that are not normally taught in most martial arts classes, they are good for self-defense and not sports. Ripping and tearing your opponent in a professional match will obviously lead to a disqualification. However, you will need these skills if you are attacked at home and must fight to stay alive.

You will be taught how to rip by using your hands and tearing any soft part of the body your hands can grab. If you keenly follow an MMA or boxing match, you will notice that when an opponent is injured and bleeding, the other opponent will always hit the injured part. The same principle is normally applied in the dojo. So if the assailant has any previous injury, you will be taught to attack the injury with rips and tears until it opens again to make your opponent surrender or run.

Pinching

It is important to understand that self-defense tactics are different from the tactics of the sport taught in a martial arts class. So pinching is one of them. This is a useful self-defense technique that’s normally taught to women. Most people will think that this is a skill you don’t have to be taught. However, you will be taught how to apply it when your arms are pinned. You will also learn the different pressure points or nerves that are regarded as vulnerable body parts. The two main areas include the inner part of the thigh and the armpits.

In most cases, pinching will not disable an attacker. However, it is effective enough to interrupt their thought process and allow you to escape the initial assault. You will also be taught in a martial arts class how to use the second knuckles of the index and middle fingers to pinch your attacker. You should pinch and twist any part of the assailant you can grab with all the force and strength you have.

Biting

Biting is something we are taught from birth not to do. This is because the jaw muscles are one of the strongest set of muscles we have. The teeth are extremely sharp and hard too. However, this is the last defense technique taught in a martial arts class when you are pinned down and there is no other technique you can execute. This creates immense pain and stops your attacker from doing anything so it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

In the dojo, you will be advised to completely bite off a chunk if you are able to grab any part of the assailant with your teeth. The average person who has never been in a martial arts training can inflict enough pain to escape through biting. This technique may sound disgusting but it could be the only thing you have to stay alive.

Head Butts

Since head butts can inflict some serious damage to the opponent, they are banned in MMA and boxing matches. However, they are taught in self-defense classes. Instructors are normally very careful when teaching this technique since serious injuries can occur if the head hits the student’s head in the wrong way.

You will be taught how to use headbutts against vulnerable body parts of the attacker. The thickest part of the skull is the top of the forehead at the hairline. So this is the best place to strike with. The back of the skull can also be used especially if your attacker grabs you from behind. So make sure you give the best smash into the face of the assailant. You can also use the sides of the head to knock down your attacker as well. Much like a punch, a good strike from the side of your head to the jaw, nose, throat or face of the attacker could disable them and give you a chance to escape.
